We join new member, Helen Mahaffey, for a poetical take on her first Sundowners adventure sailing to Venice.
New to Sundowners’ sailing
Knowing not what would unfold
The great adventures ahead
And beautiful sights to behold
Skippers Gareth & Paul
Put us all at our ease
As we set sail from Pula via Porec
To the splendour of Venice
We saw the wonder of dolphins
On our passage at dawn
And a luminous rainbow lit
right over our bowwhile ‘twas still only morn
Then came big winds and lashing rain
Our two boats cutting through waves
Covering fifty eight nautical miles
With full and elegant sails
Time for a day’s rest in Venice
Soaking in Basilica & St Mark’s Square,
Gondolas & the Grand Canal
An experience for us all to enjoy & to share
And next day’s sail took us to Slovenia
Fifty nine nautical miles more to do
through calmer waters to Izola
To a country for all of us new
Next day’s sail to Croatia’s Rovinj
Back streets cobbled full of delight
Winding up to the town’s chapel
A truly wonderful sight
We’ve stopped for lunch on our boats
After swims in the sea
Can anything match this
So content and happy
And Madonna’s Bay
Was nothing like the music icon
No divas but divers here
Blue skies and warm sun
And so back to Pula
Where we have still so much choice
To experience gladiators at the Colosseum
or the place of muse for James Joyce
So a week with the Sundowners
And what can I say?
You cannot pack more pure wonder
into one day
Thank you skippers and sail-mates
It’s together working in teams
That makes the experience so special
It’s the stuff made of dreams
