Sunset over Ponza Harbour – the gorgeous holiday island beloved by Romans old and new.

A few motley land lubbers arriving by ferry from Naples at the marina in Procida where we picked up the boats.
This gives a strong sense of the history of the islands – a pirate stronghold turned prison towering over the calm waters of the bay. Every island had similar combinations of past conquests by people and volcanoes, ancient buildings and geophysical wonders.

Another fine sail on our way to Ventotene, blissfully unaware that our destination had the tightest harbour entrance and sharpest heave to starboard seconds after entering that any of us had ever encountered.

The picturesque haven of Porto di Sant’ Angelo, Ischia, with its west facing beach and east facing harbour, where we happily moored up, and climbed up to the restaurant. “No-one told me there were this many steps” someone was heard to say. But the ice-cream parlour was still open when we trooped back down, and so the habit was quickly formed – every meal ashore had to end with a large Italian cone!

Enjoying one of those idyllic Mediterranean dinners – the wine flowed and the waves gently swished below us.
Showing the extremes of Naples – on the one hand extraordinary architecture in beautiful churches, and on the other the Maradonna wall, one of the most bizarre things you’re likely to come across.

Being served by an extraordinary wine waiter – you really can’t put a price on that!
Taking a day to go up Mt Vesuvius and visit the main crater which poured a 30 km high plume of molten ash over Herculaneum.

Crew photo at Ponza where we decided to stay for two nights to give us time to the complete a circumnavigation of this extraordinary volcanic island.
