Sailing in Denmark is so good many Danes choose not to sail anywhere else! Next summer the Sundowners are off to explore some of the 500 islands that make up the Danish archipelago, one of the most popular cruising areas in Europe. We will be making the most of the long midsummer days to sail one of the highlights – the ‘Little Belt’ channel between the Jutland Peninsula and the island of Funen.
The Plan
Our jumping off point is the historic port of Kiel, a yachting centre on Germany’s Baltic Coast. We will fly into Hamburg on Saturday and transfer to Kiel to pick up the boats on Saturday evening. We set off for Denmark on Sunday morning and will have 6 days to explore the Jutland coast and the island of Fyn before returning to Kiel late Friday afternoon. There will be a choice to fly home on Friday evening or on Saturday.
‘Little Belt’ Sailing
Visit pretty and historic old towns such as Sonderborg, where you can moor alongside the main harbour below bustling cafes and the castle, and the port of Faaborg.
Sail under the spectacular bridges that link Funan to the Jutland peninsula at Middelfart, keeping your eyes peeled for the famous local harbour porpoises.
Anchor north of Funan at the beautiful nature reserve of Æbolo Island and visit the atmospheric old fishing harbour at Bogense.
Sail along the scenic and tranquil Haderslev fjord, or seek anchor amongst the many rural islands and sheltered waterways, where windmills, pastures and peaceful woodlands characterise the scenery.
Explore the beaches, bays and crystal clear Baltic waters of the South Funen Archipelago, including the idyllic island of Ærø with its iconic beach huts!
Sailing Conditions
The climate is temperate – summers are warm with periods of fine, weather and long daylight hours, although conditions can be changeable. The prevailing wind is westerly and moderate. The Baltic itself is effectively tideless and the water is brackish rather than salty. Distances in the area are short and facilities are excellent, with numerous marinas, both large and small, and a multitude of safe, attractive anchorages. General living costs are comparable to the UK.
Important Trip Information
The price for the trip is £325 which includes yacht charter and end of charter cleaning.
Not included in the event price are flights, transfers, transit log, victualling, meals ashore, diesel, mooring fees, and shore accommodation and any personal expenditure.
The payment schedule is as follows:

The Club’s standard Event Terms & Conditions apply. Full details can be found on the website but in summary:
- Paying your deposit commits you to the trip and to paying all payments as and when required.
- If you withdraw from an event you are still liable for the full cost unless a replacement participant is found.
- If a replacement is found there will be an administration charge made for the change of participant
- You agree to bear the shared cost of any security deposit loss levied by the charter company for damages. The full cost of the deposit is €1000 per boat.
Flights and Transfers
There are regular, direct flights from London (LHR/LGW) to Hamburg (Easyjet, BA, Germanwings). Flight time is around 1.5 hours and flight costs are approx. £150 return.
From Hamburg airport it will be necessary to catch the regular transfer bus to Kiel which costs 19 Euro (one way) and takes 1.5 hours. There will be a short taxi ride to the marina on arrival at Kiel.
Do not book flights until advised to do so by the event organiser.
