Galicia

Galicia is another first for Sundowners. Situated just south of Biscay in Spain’s northwest it is a verdant region with an Atlantic coastline. Galicia National Park is a pocket cruising ground with offshore islands, stunning anchorages in bays with sandy beaches, warm weather and an incredible history.  The western cliffs of Cape Finisterre were considered by the Romans to be the end of the known world. It is a popular destination for the Spaniards but relatively few Brits know about it.

Vigo

Our adventure starts in the handsome town of Vigo up the Rias Baixas estuary.  There will be time to visit the beautiful historic old town, a UNESCO-listed world heritage centre, and the Castro fortress before setting off to explore the region.

The Cíes Islands

The Romans called the Cíes Islands in Galicia, ‘the islands of the Gods’, and to this day they still an idyllic paradise where you can enjoy nature and the sea. The main beach was chosen as the best in the world by The Guardian newspaper. Heaven on earth? If not, then this is close.

Crystal-clear intense turquoise waters. Beaches with incredibly fine white sand. A lake whose transparent surface enables you to see the wide variety of fish that live there.  There are four islands in the archipelago and besides being a fairy-tale setting, is also of great ecological importance. Its stunning landscapes form part of the Islas Atlánticas National Park, outstanding for its rich seabeds and some of the most important colonies of marine birds in the world. The Atlantic Ocean, sand dunes, pine forests, cliffs…

Portanova and Sanxenxo

Spoilt for choice – there are two fine marinas here. The Club Nautico Portanova and the Real Club Nautico de Sanxenxo. Club Nautico Portanova has a modern clubhouse and the town has a bustling market which is open every day. A Kilo of fresh mussels can be found at the market for just 10€.
