About Fethiye Bay – Sailing, Sunshine and Ruins

The Club’s curtain raiser to the Med for 2022 will be sailing from Fethiye Bay for our Turkey May Bank Holiday Sailing Weekend.  This will be a 4 day cruise around Fethiye Bay where you can find some of Turkey’s most attractive bays.  As it’s a well protected area challenging sailing conditions are not expected.

Itinerary

Taking advantage of the Bank Holiday weekend, we’ll be flying to Dalaman on Friday 29th April, arriving late evening.  If possible we’ll board the yachts on arrival but if unavailable hotel accommodation will be necesary for Friday night.  We’ll board the boats in Fethiye and set off on Saturday morning.  There will then be 4 days to explore the Gulf of Fethiye before returning to base late Tuesday afternoon.  You will be able to fly home on Tuesday evening or on Wednesday.

Coldwater Bay

A fantastic place for a spot of swimming.  The name of the bay comes from cold freshwater springs that enter the sea from the bottom of the bay.

You can hike up a hill to the deserted Greek village of Kayakoy.  In 1923, the Greek Christians living in Kayakoy, Turkey departed after a population exchange between the Greek and Turkish governments, leaving it an abandoned village. 500 homes lie in ruins and it is now a UNESCO World Friendship and Peace Village.

Fethiye

Fethiye old town has a great fish market and well-stocked fruit & vegetable stalls. In the evenings, you can buy fresh fish at the market and then the local restaurants will cook it for you for a small fee. It also has a Bazaar which is worth strolling through after dinner.

You can extend your stay with a day trip up the River Dalyan or visit the spectacular Saklikent Gorge.

Sailing Weather

The weather is usually pleasant at this time of year with daytime temperatures reaching 20-25 degrees Celsius.  As the summer weather pattern isn’t established at this time of year, wet and cooler conditions are possible.  Winds are generally light but could reach F5.
