The Sundowners’ Chill-Out
The Sundowners’ early-summer trip will be sailing the idyllic Balearics for our Menorca Sailing In The Sunshine week. Menorca, or Minorca, is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. Its location is just northeast of Mallorca and it is one of the most relaxed islands in the Balearics with a chill-out feel. Its preserved natural beauty is perfect for those looking to find fresh unspoilt locations to travel in. Today it is a European Biological Reserve and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with more than 75% of its area protected.
Menorca
There are about 40 sheltered calas along the 75 miles of coastline which are great for sailing around the island and provide shelter including ideal anchorages for lunch or dinner. The deepest natural harbour is in the main town of Mahón which is more than 3 and a half nautical miles in length making it the world’s largest natural deep-water harbour surpassed only by Pearl Harbour.
History
The island enjoys a thriving history. From the bronze age settlements all the way through to British colonialism in recent centuries. The scenery and points of interest dotted around the island are marvellous. This part of the Mediterranean offers weather and conditions which are ideal for any type of sailing holiday, Menorca offers something for all sailing experiences. If we want to island hop, the next island along is just twenty-five nautical miles away at Mallorca’s North-Eastern corner. The north contains the broad bays of Alcudia and Pollenca. These bays provide a variety of anchorages. The walled town of Alcúdia is also nearby with history dating back centuries.
Sailing Options
The Menorca Sailing In The Sunshine trip offers short sailing from and a lot of flexibility. The Port de Mahòn Marina is a good starting point in the South with Ciutadella being a good starting point in the north – especially if we want to pop across to Mallorca.
From Menorca’s Mahon we can explore the harbour and the pleasant capital, which is built on top of cliffs on the southern shore. The local gin and tonic is still produced on site in the old-fashioned way or the Balearic way with a sweet bitter lemon mix they call Pomada. Even though it tastes like lemonade it’s potent stuff! A short sail north would take us to one of the numerous nature reserves where we can anchor anywhere between the mainland and the island of Colom.
La Vall offers 3 bays one after the other and beautiful anchorage spots. We can swim here without bumping in to crowds of tourists as the beaches are hard to reach by land. Northwards at the end of a bay is Fornells Restaurant. Fornells has built up its reputation for fresh seafood thanks to local fishermen. The north eastern coast is great for diving as well, thanks to many submerged relics and caverns.
