Overview

For our late summer trip to the warm waters of the Mediterranean we’re heading to Turkey. Starting from Fethiye Bay we’ll sail South along the Lycean coast. At this time of year the sea is at its warmest with daytime temperatures around 28 degrees, so pleasantly hot.

Our route will take us past the ancient Lycean City of Patara where Saint Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus, was born in 280 AD.

Some of the places we’ll be visiting:

Kalkan

With the absence of mass tourism, Kalkan remains a charming and unspoiled haven with brilliant blue crystal-clear sea, historic architecture, ancient history and warm traditional Turkish hospitality. Once an Ottoman Greek and Turkish fishing village, Kalkan attracts the kind of visitor who would also enjoy Tuscany or the Dordogne. The Guardian likens the town to “the Italian Riviera minus the poseurs.”

The Kekova Roads

This is a sheltered water similar to the Solent where Kekova Island shields the area from the open sea. Within these waters you can find the submerged ruins of a sunken city which can be explored by dinghy. Inside Kekova Roads is the inner sea of Ucagiz Limani with attractive anchorages and a number of rickety jetties with restaurants serving seafarers. Ucagiz is the ideal place to buy that Turkish rug you’ve always promised yourself!

Sunken Ruins
Kale Koy

Kale Koy

Built in the Middle Ages and perched high above Kekova Roads is the imposing Simena castle at Kale Koy. Climbing up to the fortress at the end of the day offers the chance to see a spectacular sunset over the bay as well as looking down on a Lycean sarcophagus in the water below. There is a small theatre that seats 300 in its seven rows within the castle. The fortress is open from 08:00 to 19:00 in summer. The entry fee is 14 TL.

Kas

Like many towns in Turkey, Kas had a substantial Greek population until 1923, when there was a population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Greek architecture is still evident in the narrow streets lined with colourful balconies and overhanging bougainvillea.

Weather

This is probably the best time of year to visit Turkey.  The sea has had all summer to warm up but the searing heat of July & August has by now given way to pleasant daytime temperatures of around 28 degrees and night time temperatures of 20 degrees.

Sailing

This is an interesting cruising ground with many attractive anchorages and harbours. We aim to stop for lunch in a bay each day before sailing on to our evening destination. Winds are generally light though may reach F5 but challenging sailing conditions are not expected.
